that illness and disease were punishments sent by the gods or evil spirits to punish humanity (Jankowski, 2010). Hippocrates changed this scenario by taking shifting medicine away from the realm
of magic and the belief that disease and illness were caused by the gods and towards a scientific approach, which viewed disease as the result of natural causes (Hippocrates, 2011).
This examination of the life and influence of Hippocrates dramatizes the tremendous influence that the ancient Greek medical practice that he established-which utilizes his philosophy of examining the natural world
for the physical causes of illness-has had on modern society. The education of Hippocrates Hippocrates was born sometime around the year 460 B.C. on the island of Cos,
which is in the southeastern Aegean Sea. It is believed by historians that his childhood was probably typical and pleasant and that his basic education occurred within the context of
his native island society (Jankowski, 2010). Ancient Greek education for young males (females typically received no formal education) consisted of two categories, which are physical education and academics(Jankowski, 2010).
It was believed that education was necessary for young men in order to prepare them for responsibilities of citizenship and to prepare them as the societys future leaders (Jankowski, 2010).
As Hippocrates father, Heraclides, was a physician, it is likely that he was his sons first instructor in medicine (Jankowski, 2010). However, when he was 30 years of age,
Hippocrates left Cos and journeyed to Rhodes, where he continued his medical education, as there were many medical schools located in the healing temples of this city, with each student
assigned to study under the supervision of a practicing doctor (Jankowski, 2010). Other sources agree with Jankowski that Hippocrates received additional education away from his island home of Cos,
