in American society it still incites much controversy because of language and potentially racist ideals. While it is primarily nothing more than a novel that discusses the adventures of one
boy during the 19th century, it is also a story that is highly explicated for various reasons. The following paper examines the influences in Mark Twains life that incited the
writing of this novel and then discusses possible elements of racism in the novel. Influences Mark Twain, born Samuel Clemens, was a man who grew up in Missouri
in times of slavery (Mark Twain). Slavery was everywhere and while it was something of a confusing issue in some places, it was also widely accepted as the norm in
society. In recalling his childhood, that involved slavery, he once noted that, "In my schoolboy days I had no aversion to slavery...I was not aware that there was anything wrong
about it" (Gribben). He is also a man who grew up and learned about life along and within the Mississippi River. In fact, his name, Mark Twain, is a name
that reflects procedures for people navigating along the Mississippi River. In essence, the novel, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn," is a novel that possesses and environment and a timer period
with which Twain was quite familiar. There appears to be no individual he likely knew as Huck Finn, but perhaps, as a writer, Twain was incredibly observant and essentially
paid attention to the people of his birthplace, habits of the people in the region, the language used by the people, and the general characteristics of people in that region
of the county. He is also likely to have been influenced by his own childhood memories. For example, "From a secret hiding place Clemens witnessed the autopsy of his father.
