by looking at the modern-day practices surrounding Halloween. Halloween is known in many Western societies as the day children don costumes and go door-to-door getting candy and other treats. The
day is also known as the time of ghouls, goblins, ghosts and witches. Many people view Halloween as harmless, a time for fun and masquerade but others see it as
a ghastly and demonically-inspired time to be avoided completely (Slick, 1998). The origin and history of Halloween is interesting; it is also filled with different tales. To
begin, the word Halloween is derived from the phrase "All Hallows Eve," which occurs every year on October 31. In Northwestern Europe, October 31 brought the end of summer. November
1 has always been All Hallows Day or All Saints Day. Halloween is thus, the eve of All Saints Day. Most historians who study the origins of Halloween assert
that it can be traced back to Scotland and Ireland about the same time that Christ ministered. The Celts celebrated the end of summer on October 31. This was the
time when herders moved their animals into the shelter of barns and/or the protection of pens to live through the winter months. It was also the time that farmers harvested
their crops. October 31 heralded in a change in lifestyle for people and animals and it was greeted with a festival that was called Samhain, meaning the end of the
summer (Slick, 1998). During those eras, people lived with a significant amount of superstition and this changing of the seasons was no different. People believed that on
