This 40 page paper looks at the problem of high infant mortality rates in Sub Sahara Africa. The paper looks starts by looking at the general situation in Sub – Saharan Africa, an then considers South Africa and Botswana and the ways that they have successful in reducing the high rate of infant mortality or in indicated ways in which it maybe improved. The third section of the paper looks at Sierra Leone and Ethiopia and considers why they have not been successful in reducing the rate of infant mortality. The bibliography cites 12 sources.

1. Introduction There have been many different programmes aimed at improving healthcare in developing arras such as sub-Sahara Africa. One area where progress has
been slow is that of infant mortality rates. There was a period of infant mortality rates decreasing But this trend appears to have reversed according to several different research articles
(Houweling et al, 2006; Garennea and Gakusi, 2006; Victora et al, 2006). There is little doubt that some headway has been made in the past, but the deterioration is once
against a firmly established trend. There are many programmes that seek to reduce the mortality rate and the Millennium goals include the target of reducing infant mortality by two third
by the year 2015 (Houweling et al, 2006). Infant mortality rate is defined as the rate of mortality in children under five years of age (Houweling et al,
2006). In developed countries the steady and constant decline in infant mortality which have reflected the demographic changes. The sub Saharan African nations have had the same health transition take
place as the demographic changes, but this change has started at a later date (Garennea and Gakusi, 2006). However this does not account for there reversal in the infant mortality
rates seen since the 1980s. This paper will look at the patterns and trend in infant mortality in sub Sahara Africa, considering the causes the approaches that have been
adopted. The paper will first look at the area as a whole and the consider specific areas where different approaches have been adopted to identify the strategies that have been
