The massive amount of funding required to produce a major motion picture and then to distribute that picture is such that, if a movie studio produces a film that doesnt make back its budget, the result is extreme losses for the studio. Therefore, even the best studios may only be one major flop away from total disaster. For instance, one might look at the 1980s debacle of the film "Heavens Gate" which nearly sunk Warner Brothers after a considerable investment led toe virtually no returns at all. For this reason, movie studios have to constantly work to produce innovations that increase the chances of their films being box office successes. It is in this area where DreamWorks Animation has succeeded most admirably. This paper will explore DreamWorks as a company, with an eye towards the innovative and strategic qualities that make DreamWorks a consistent contender in an incredibly competitive market. This paragraph helps the student begin to explore the various innovations which DreamWorks offers. One of the major advantages which DreamWorks boasts is the character of Shrek. Shrek was the main character in one of the companys first extraordinarily successful motion pictures, and has since become one of the most recognizable figures in contemporary animation, and a strong indicator of the brands market recognition and perceived value (Corliss, 2010). As such, the company enjoys a character-oriented market presence that also functions as a profitable franchise in its own right, much like its competitor Disney (Corliss, 2010). This is a superficial, but nonetheless significant, indicator of DreamWorks careful positioning of itself in an advantageous position within the market.
