The general social development has meant many of the risky practices associated with the past, including but not limited to unprotected exposure to risk substances, working with high risk dangerous equipment without safety instruction or measures and the generally poor conditions have been generally eliminated in the developed world. However, this does not mean there are no risks present, it is known that there are risks present in both the developed and the developing world. There are many examples to show the potential scale of risks which exist in developing and the developed world, such as the Union Carbide disaster in Bhopal in 1984, and more recently with the BP Deep Water Horizon oil rig disaster (Sharplin, 1985, p229; Ponting, 2011, p13). The aim of this paper is to look at the general safety aspects and principles in industrial areas which should help to contain and minimise these types of disaster occurring. The International Labor Organization (ILO) adopted a framework of principles that should underpin occupational health and safety, these may be seen as covering a wide range of safety issues and include physical as psychological well being. There are eleven principles that deal with different elements; together they give a good overview. The first principle is that all workers have rights, this principle was adopted following the 1984 International Labor Conference (Alli, 2001, p17). These rights include the right to work in a working environment that is both safe and healthy, that the working conditions should provide for well bring and human dignity and the last element of this deals with psychological needs (as demonstrated in Maslows hierarchy of needs) where the work should provide the real potential for employee self achievement and self fulfilment (Alli, 2001, p17; Bowen and ...
