of Jakarta, which is located on the island of Java, lack reliable access to the citys public water system, and, as a result, many people rely upon groundwater. Routinely, these
residents rely upon withdrawals from the citys aquifers for their water supply (Ramachandran, 2008). As a consequences, these aquifers have been overdrawn for over a decade. The World Bank reported
that aquifer levels in the northern section of the city were overdrawn in 1998 and this situation has not only led to seawater contamination, as well as other forms of
contamination, but the drop in the aquifer water level, which supports the substrate, land has began to subside (Ramachandran, 2008). Statistics indicate that less than 40 percent of the Indonesian
population as a whole have access to clean water and 6 million poor people have to purchase their water, which is sold in containers, and is, therefore, more costly than
water provided by the water system (Peterson, 2010). Furthermore, only 1 percent of the urban population is served by the city sewage systems and less then 10 cities in Indonesia
have sewage networks (Peterson, 2010). An online report indicates that the electricity sector providing power in Indonesia is headed towards crisis unless significant investments are made in this system.
