up of roughly 17,500 islands. The health care system of is struggling with problems that that are associated with its developing status and a rural population with low socioeconomic status.
The following overview begins with the issue of social equity for women, but then addresses a variety of topics having to do with health status for the Indonesian populace.
Social Equity Although 85 percent of Indonesia is Muslim and Islam is known for its suppression of women, Fattore, Scotto and Sitasari (2010) argue that Indonesian attitudes towards women are
only superficially connected to their faith or culture. According to their analysis, democratization and the trend towards gender equity within Indonesia appears to be mutually reinforcing and independent of religious
influence (Fattore, Scotto and Sitasari, 2010). Rammohan and Johar (2009) utilized data from the 2000 Indonesian Family Life Survey to investigate the role played by kinship norms, as well as
the effect of work force participation, on the issue of married womens autonomy within Indonesian society. This study found that living in "patrilocal communities" decreased the degree of physical autonomy
available to married women, but that living in "uxolocal communities" caused improvements in the degree of autonomy held by married women in regards to both personal and child-related decision-making (Rammohan
