The decision led to a marked deterioration in Indo-American relations which included mutually hostile rhetoric which was not heard since the American "tilt" toward Pakistan in 1971 during the Bangladesh crisis (59). Americas imposition of economic sanctions created further problems for relations between India and the United States (59). The strained relations between the United States and India bring up many questions about the present and the future. But one question seems to stand out. That is, what is the difference between how the political climate is perceived by India as opposed to how it is perceived on U.S. soil? Certainly there are differences between how the relationship between the two nations are perceived. Much has to do with culture and history. One interesting point which comes into play is that until recent years, India had only a small lobby in America (Rathnam PG). Thus, there have been few people who would influence American foreign policy toward India (PG). One reason why there would be little influence exerted on the U.S. government from within is that there are not many Indians living in the nation. As it stands, there are less than one million Indians living in the United States (PG). Further, most are in the country for professional reasons and take little interest in politics (PG). One might say that these people, who have relocated to the states have done so as a consequence of globalization. Still, the people who do reside in the U.S. sometimes cannot help but be concerned about their home land. Still, it seems as if they do not draw on their resources to help India (PG). ...
