the spine (Watson, 2009). Myelomeningocele spina bifida is one of the most severe forms, and occurs when there is an opening in the back that allows "the protective coatings
of the spine and the nerves of the spinal cord" to emerge, often in the form of a sack (Watson, 2009, p. 7). Generally, infants with this form of
spina bifida undergo surgery shortly after birth to close the hole, though damage to the nerves caused by the condition result in a variety of different complications, ranging from paralysis
to hydrocephalus (Spina Bifida (Myelomeningocele), 2009).. Hydrocephalus is one of the causative factors in developmental delays related to this type of spina bifida. Hydrocephalus results when the
defect in the spinal cord impacts the flow of fluid from the brain and spinal cord (Watson, 2009). During normal function, brain and spinal fluids drain through the spinal
cord, but spinal defects caused by this condition result in a buildup of fluids in the brain that can damage brain tissues and cause seizures, nervous system damage and developmental
delays if not treated quickly (Watson, 2009). Depending on the breadth of damage, the ability to act quickly and reduce fluid retention in the brain and the ability to
control for fluid retention (often resulting in the implantation of stents to allow for draining of fluids), varied physical issues and developmental delays may be present. Children with
spina bifida often undergo multiple surgeries in infancy and reach a point of physiological stability, with the exception necessary stent-related surgeries to continue to maintain appropriate drainage to reduce hydrocephalus.
The long-term prognosis for individuals born with spina bifida depends on the nature of the damage and the impacts of the surgical processes applied early in infancy. There
