SA144ind.rtf In the current climate in the United States, people live in fear. They are less concerned with first amendment rights than they are with their own personal safety. In fact, many people have stated that they would be willing to give up some rights if in fact they could protect themselves and their families. They do not mind being stopped at random by police, or having to show identification. They realize it is in part something done to protect them from harm. Yet, that is the state of America after September 11, 2001. Prior to that time, things were decidedly different. Before September 11th people were very concerned about maintaining individual rights and freedoms and in fact, individual rights are important in maintaining a good society. It is the difference between a totalitarian government and democracy. It is the difference from being able to choose what vocation to look into and being told what to do with ones life. It is the difference between being able to browse in a bookstore, with no restraint, and being told what one can read or say or think. The concept of individual freedom is not new and has been addressed by many philosophers. In political philosophy, several ideas pertinent to individualism go to the Kantian point of view that suggests individuals are ends in themselves and thus see people as beings who should be given respect for their own autonomy (Honderich, 1995).
