This paper discusses how people develop their personal and workplace values, how they drive behavior, whether or not they align with those of the workplace, and what happens if they do not. Discussion Developing personal and organizational values: People start to develop a value system very early in life, and naturally most of those values come from their parents. These are the people they see first, the people they love and the people they trust. They tend to accept what their parents tell them and internalize those comments without thinking. This is why young voters often vote the same way their parents do, and why their political thinking, social attitudes and so on are the same. Its also why, as people get older, they often change their political affiliation and state opinions on important issues (abortion, health care, immigration, etc) that are very different from those they expressed earlier. Organizations are much different, because they are created to meet a need and they operate for profit. Still, most companies develop a mission statement and code of ethics in which they spell out clearly what they want to accomplish and how they intend to accomplish it. Recent scandals (Enron, WorldCom) and outlandish executive salaries and perks have raised the issue of whether or not companies actually abide by their ethical positions or are simply greedy.
