these clients "Hispanic," Delgado-Romero points out that the term "Hispanic" is a "controversial panethnic" description that glosses "over vital differences among millions of people" who derive from Central and South
American countries (Delgado-Romero, 2001, p. 207). However, "Latino" and "Latina," as Spanish words, are viewed as more inclusive and "politically progressive," therefore Latino/a will be used in discussing Central
and South American ethnicity (Delgado-Romero, 2001). However, it should be noted by counselors that Latino/as prefer to be noted by their country of origin (Mexican, Cuban, etc.) than by this
umbrella term. In meeting a Latino client for the first time, Delgado-Romero (2001) recommends introducing oneself to the client within the context of your own cultural background. He states that
it is important to validate a "respectful multicultural context" (Delgado-Romero, 2001, p. 207). There are several models of racial or ethnic identity that can be useful to the counselor
in assessing, conceptualizing and providing the appropriate intervention to the client, such as the Racial/Cultural Identity Development Model (R/CID) or the Chicano/Latino Ethic Development Model (Delgado-Romero, 2001). The R/CID model,
developed by Sue and Sue in 1999, lists 5 stages of development, which minorities experience within the process of trying to understand their identity within the framework of mainstream culture.
These five stages are: "Conformity, Dissonance, Resistance and Immersion, Introspection and Integrative Awareness" (Delgado-Romero, 2001, p. 207). At each of these stages, the client is likely to exhibit specific attitudes
