of late. With terrorist activity, many people say that they do not care about their privacy. They want to be safe and so they are prepared to give up their
individual freedoms. Yet, many do not realize that the concept of giving up rights during wartime is not new. It happened during World War I as well as many other
times in history. To a great extent, the United States was justified in creating limitations but not everyone agrees. Rankin (2001) explains that citizens have held truths about
freedom to be self-evident for more than two hundred years. People believe that everyone is created equal and so they have particular unalienable rights (2001). Although that is
true, legal scholars have been concerned that individual liberty in America has been crumbling since September 11, 2001 (2001). There is truth to that. Again, laws have been passed to
allow the government to uncover things that they would not ordinarily be able to do under the law. Now, the government has a great deal of ability to open doors,
but this impedes the freedom of the people of the United States. While it has happened in recent weeks, it is not the first time that this has occurred (2001).
The U.S. has imprisoned of dissidents in the Civil War and everyone remembers the Japanese Internment during World War II (Rankin, 2001). Americans
have been willing to give up fundamental rights for security purposes (2001). Because terrorists have slammed passenger planes into the World Trade Center and Pentagon, it seems to be another
