gender, age and personal traits on individual behavior. Discussion Ethnicity, gender, age and religion are "four of the major factors that cause diversity," and without diversity, the world would be
a "dull, unfriendly environment that would have failed by now" (Mathews, 2006). But its also possible, in a diverse society, to misunderstand others, unless we can put ourselves in their
place (Mathews, 2006). These categories help us to do that, and by so doing, we can understand others (Mathews, 2006). Mathews points out that while we can try and understand
behavior, there is "no way to tell what made an individual act the way that they do" (Mathews, 2006). Certain things that occur at different points in a persons life
will impact their individual behavior, but its impossible to assume that what one person will do is the same for all (Mathews, 2006). While its generally true that a "very
mature person will usually be older," there are obviously young people who are much more mature than their years (Mathews, 2006). Ethnicity, according to Mathews, meant nothing to the
human race in the past, but today it is a plays a "major role in society" (Mathews, 2006). The culture of the ethnic group will affect the way in which
a child develops, but perhaps even more importantly, the media and society affect how the child will be treated because of their ethnicity (Mathews, 2006). If society and media attention
is kind and welcoming, the behavior will be positive; if the media and society shun the group for its ethnicity, the individual behavior of a member of the group will
be negative and "the individual will become angry" (Mathews, 2006). On the other hand, "[I]f the media and society welcome the ethnic group, the individual will be happy" (Mathews, 2006).
