Each country has a significant percentage of indigenous peoples and each society has responded to those peoples in unique ways. Unfortunately those societies are often socioculturally stratified when
it comes to the manner that indigenous peoples are accepted within them. There are examples, however, in both India and in North America in which the same indigenous peoples
that occupy the lowest social echelon have banded together to make significant changes in the contemporary urban societies in which they live. Many
are surprised to learn that in India a caste system is still very much in effect. The Indian state of Kerala is a particularly ready example of the impact
of this system in the urban environment. Keralas history, of course, is tied to that of India as a whole. Her culture and politics have been shaped both
directly and indirectly by those same factors that shaped Indian culture and politics. The various invasion of the Aryans, Moguls and British, in particular, throughout Indian history have had
a long-lasting impact on socio-politics and even religions particularly of the lower caste peoples of Kerala (Jeyaraj, 1996). European colonization has had a particularly heavy toll on India as
a whole and the region we now know as Kerala specifically. This is true in regard to the natural resources of this region, the people as a whole, and
