Cultures that are radically separated by geography and distance in ancient times have often been put
into direct interaction with one another as our world has evolved. Such was the case with the indigenous peoples of Native America and the Europeans peoples. The intent
of this paper is to explore one representative group of Native American culture in B.C.E. and then to compare and contrast that group and their lifeways with those of the
European peoples as they existed in the C.E., around the time that the decision was made to invade the Americas. Interestingly, many parallels can be found between the economic
pathways that developed between these peoples and European mainstream economy as it evolved in the C.E. The Chinook and other Native American
peoples of the North American Coasts are characterized, in part, on their development of extensive trade networks. In addition to the thriving trade of items foraged from their respective
environments, Printzer (2000) observes that by around 700 B.C.E. these people had developed highly advanced arts and crafts that were traded quite readily between one group and another. Pre-contact
trade goods included both consumable goods and non-consumable goods. Obviously, sedentary villages had various basic needs such as food that could be met, in part, through trade with others.
