stories tell of politics and hazards, personalities and a new world. The following paper examines the perceptions of Columbus and Smith through their works, comparing how they perceived the natives.
The works utilized are Christopher Columbus Letter from the First Voyage to Luis de Santangel and John Smiths General History of Virginia, New England and the Summer Isles. Both men
appear to have perceived the natives in a very objective, if colonial, manner, offering relatively historic, if romantic, illustrations without strong prejudice or a sense of superiority on the Westerners
part. Indians: Columbus and Smith In Columbus words he first illustrates, in this relatively short letter, that the natives go around
naked, except for some women who use a leaf or some fabric to cover parts occasionally. He indicates that, "They have neither iron. nor steel, nor aims, nor are they
competent to use them, not that they are not well-formed and of handsome stature, but because they are timid to a surprising degree" (Columbus). In Smiths case he is presented
a general look at what seems to be many different tribes of people, not just one. He indicates that, "the people differ very much in stature...Some being very great as
the Sasquesahanicks; others very little, as the Wighcocomocaes: but generally tall and straight, of a comely proportion" (Smith). He also indicates that they have many different types of temperaments, illustrating
