on nonviolence. In spite of its predilection for nonviolence, India has survived a number of hostile attacks and attempted takeovers since its inception. In India, religion is not just a
belief; it is a lifestyle of not harming others. Their dedication to ideals such as continence or Brahmacharya is absolute. Based on this commitment, Gandhi is credited with developing the
concepts of Ahimsa (non-violence) and Satyagraha (holding fast to truth or firmness in a righteous cause). While he is responsible for developing them, he inherited the basis of them from
his heritage. These concepts have served India in its fight for independence and human rights throughout its history. This paper looks at just one of those fights, the fight for
independence of India from British rule, with focus on its preference for nonviolent action. Historical Contributing Factors to British Invasion
In 1776, Britain controlled most of Canada, the Indian subcontinent, Malaya, Hong Kong, and dominated China economically. By 1800, it controlled most of Eastern Africa.
It conquered through annexations of governments, leaving princes intact but without power. The Muslims, particularly the Sikhs, in India tried to fight off the aggressors, but the Hindus in India
