then address the question directly. The present conflict between India and Pakistan over the territory of Kashmir is not a new conflict. It has been going on for decades (BBC News, India and Pakistan, 2001). When India gained its independence from Britain in 1947, the region was partitioned into two areas, India, which is primarily Hindu and Pakistan, which is primarily Muslim (BBC News, India and Pakistan, 2001). Under the plan in 1947, Kashmir was allowed to choose between being a part of India or a part of Pakistan (BBC News, Q & A: Kashmir, 2001). The Kashmir territory at the time was under the rule of the Maharaja, Hari Singh who wanted to be independent of both other countries (BBC News, Q & A: Kashmir, 2001). However, Singh acceded to India and turned over major decision making powers to the government of India (BBC News, Q & A: Kashmir, 2001). The trade-off was that India would provide Kashmir with military aid as well as a referendum to the Constitution of India (BBC News, Q & A: Kashmir, 2001). Kashmir is, thus, a part of India but because it is primarily Muslim, Pakistan believes Kashmir should be part of Pakistan (BBC News, India and Pakistan, 2001). Religion is a key component in the conflict(BBC News, Q & A: Kashmir, 2001; BBC News, India and Pakistan, 2001). In fact, the population of the combined Indian state of Jammu and Indian-controlled Kashmir is in excess of 60 percent Muslim (BBC News, Q & A: Kashmir, 2001).
