whom, Dorian, becomes fearful of getting old and wrinkled and thus makes an unknowing "arrangement" wherein his portrait will age instead of him. It is also a novel that seems to offer the reader some less than masculine characters which ultimately was used against the author Oscar Wilde in a court of law. Wilde was sentenced to prison for indecency in his life and his works, with indecency indicating homosexuality. The following paper examines this novel, seeking relationships and language that illustrate the indecency seen in Victorian times. Indecency and Relationships in The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde While modern audiences can "see in Wildes ruin the premier exhibit of Victorian prudery and hypocrisy" at the time of Wilde, and The Picture of Dorian Gray, it was a different story. "At the time...even most of Wildes friends saw his fall as inevitable punishment, the revenge of common decency on one who scorned being decent and couldnt abide being common" (Kirsch 142). Clearly this speaks of his work as well as his persona, which was anything but the traditional Victorian man. In this story Basil is an artist who is painting the beautiful Dorian. Now without any knowledge of the time period and gender roles, a modern reader would not immediately read into the story any homosexual, or indecent, undertones, but when looking at the work with that particular lens there are many such undertones. For example, Basil is painting and "As the painter looked at the gracious and comely form he had so skilfully mirrored in his art, a smile of pleasure passed across his face, and seemed about to linger there" (Wilde Chapter 1).
