motivation among students, enhanced engagement with learning activities and it enhanced the motivation of teachers (Haydon, 2008). Each year group must meet the National Curriculum Programmes of Study. With this
as the guideline, teachers develop creative learning experiences for their students. Each year has a project to complete. For example, Year 3 developed links with an inner-city school and held
a carnival. Rubrics are used so students know exactly what is expected of them. Academic performance improved as did their eagerness to learn. This school used a number of approaches
to increase engagement. Students had to complete a project that was based on their learning. How they achieved their objective was left to the students giving them a wide berth
of choices. Students tended to complete their homework more often. Not all schools have programs like these described by Haydon. In this case, lessons were thematic and students
were given choices regarding how they would demonstrate their knowledge. All students participated in the final project. They were highly motivated and excited. It is easy for a teacher
to call on the same students every time. In fact, it is natural. The same students raise their hands and so the teacher calls on them. It is important, however,
to have all students participate by responding to questions or participating in a discussion. Oral communication is a critical skill for success and people first learn this in school where
they have the opportunity to practice. One teacher writing for Scholastic (2006), reported what she does. It is not a new idea but it is one that can work.
