Cultural Miseducation, she delves into a variety of things that are relevant to curricula issues in education and also applicable to individual teacher responsibilities. Martins ideas about education do embrace
the notion of cultural wealth. That said, she believes that cultural wealth must be added to the school. At the same time, it is not a situation where one
can add cultural wealth without taking away the negative aspects. Here, Martin presents a daunting task for educators. The challenge is that one will have to change the status quo.
The simple addition of positive things is not the answer, at least according to this author. Here, there is a sense that Martin relates schools with societys other institutions in
addressing a problem that spans generations. Martin (2002) sums up her view nicely on when cultural miseducation occurs as follows: "when so many cultural liabilities or such devastating
ones are passed down that a heavy burden is placed on the next generation; or, alternatively, when invaluable portions of the cultures wealth are not passed down" (5). The problem
is evidently something that is attached to a phenomenon that is more than just a passing fad. There is an institutional problem that spans generations. This observation also implies that
there is no easy fix. In some way, Martins views on cultural wealth are reminiscent of Putnams ideas about social capital. In both instances, there is attention to the idea
that cultural awareness needs to be raised and that people need to be helped to reach their potential. Allowing students to flounder, or to get through, or simply to reap
