The story of the "Old Man and the Sea" is a story about humanity and the simple struggles for life. It takes place in a small fishing village where cultural
expectations are high, and where a person must find their meaning in their work, primarily the work of fishing. It is a story of nature and a story about internal
growth as this old man sets out to sea and catches a large marlin. In the end the man has nothing, but he does have his identity and the knowledge
that he is still a fisherman. In this simple illustration we can see that this story, for those who are familiar with Hemingways other more popular stories, is one that
is often overlooked as a Hemingway story because it addresses a very different sort of theme. But, it is a timeless theme and it is also a theme that helps
us understand some of the time period and Hemingways own life. Most people are familiar with Hemingways involvement in the war and his life after the war. But, many people
