this seemingly simple invention has lasted many years, and served to alter the way in which we live. The following paper discusses Thomas Edison and current technology that is still
trying to improve on his design, arguing that his light bulb changed the world and even in our present day of technology we are finding it hard to beat his
original design. Incandescent Light Thomas Edison is often seen as one of the greatest inventors of all time. He held 1,093 patents and is most notably known for
the invention of the light bulb, and all that came with it.1 It was Thomas Edison, as well as another man, Sir Joseph Wilson Swan in England, who both simultaneously
invented the light bulb. However, it was Thomas Edison who did much more: "He put together what he knew about electricity with what he knew about gas lights and invented
a whole system of electric lighting. This meant light bulbs, electricity generators, wires to get the electricity from the power station to the homes, fixtures (lamps, sockets, switches) for the
light bulbs, and more. It was like a big jigsaw puzzle--and Edison made up the pieces as well as fitted them together".2 A light bulb is one thing, but
creating the entire system so that they could ultimately be used by everyone, was something else and that is what truly altered the face of civilization and changed how we
