Silkos essay. In the Combat Zone by Leslie Marmon Silko In the beginning of her essay Silko notes, "Women seldom discuss our wariness or the precautions we take after
dark each time we leave the apartment, car, or office to go on the most brief errand. We take for granted that we are targeted as easy prey by muggers,
rapists, and serial killers" (Silko). This, at first, seems like a very strong statement in relationship to all women not engaging in particular activities due to their vulnerability. Not all
women live in such an environment and are, therefore, not at such a risk. But, her second remark is very true. Most women do not perhaps even think of
how they simply accept the fact that they could easily become victims of men and their crimes. They simply accept, even subconsciously, the fact that they are vulnerable. At this
point Silko goes on to illustrate how she was taught, by her father, how to use guns, how to hunt, and how to always protect herself against men. In light
of this Silkos essay makes even more sense for she is not offering a story about how she was victimized one time and how that changed her perspectives, but rather
she presents to the reader a very educated and experienced perspective from a woman who has always known how to protect herself. This is further enhanced, and deepened, when
