of business and management studies. The authors analyzed a range of successful companies and their organizational structures and processes, and concluded that there were eight common elements which could be
identified, and which were major factors contributing to the efficiency and success of those companies. These principles, they asserted, could be utilized by all organizations. Before looking specifically at the
importance of communication, therefore, we need to briefly consider the eight common themes which Peters and Waterman considered to be so vital. Firstly, they
identified a bias for action - that is, decision making should not be theoretical but should be integrated with practice. Once a decision has been made, the organization should implement
it without delay. Secondly, the customers input is essential to good business practice: the organization has to learn what the customer wants, and deliver it. Next, the company cannot rely
on bureaucratic, formalized structures: it must encourage innovation, and allow entrepreneurship to flourish. Individual good practices and ideas become part of the organizations communal knowledge base. Similarly, the workforce should
never be perceived as cogs in a machine: they are individuals, who have innate value and worth, and who actively participate in developing the value and worth of the organization
as a whole. As a corollary to this, management should never be distanced and remote from the workforce: they should take a hands-on perspective,
and in doing so, make it clear that their commitment and personal work ethic is the same as that of other employees. This requires a lean structure: if there is
