been born worldwide using this IVF and it is the most commonly used assisted reproductive technology (Dahlen, 2005). The process typically starts with the couple receiving a referral from their
general practitioner to an IVF specialist. In many cases, a nurse will be in charge of care (Dahlen, 2005). A recent Pap smear and breast exam is a usual requirement
and the woman will be requested to start taking folic acid (500 mcg) to reduce the risk of spina fida (Dahlen, 2005). In many clinics, the couple will be tested
for hepatitis, HIV and rubella and blood type will be confirmed, but every IVF provider will have a slightly different approach (Dahlen, 2005). The first part of the process
is referred to as a "trial wash," which is a test used to establish if there are enough healthy sperm in the husbands ejaculate for the procedure to be successful
(Dahlen, 2005). The wife is given a course of hormone injections in order to encourage her ovaries to produce more eggs than usual (Dahlen, 2005). These injections are required daily
and, in the last few weeks of her cycle, two injection per day are required. Many women learn to inject themselves, or they want their partner to give the injections.
A "trigger" injection is given roughly 36 hours before the egg collection is to take place (Dahlen, 2005). This contains hormones that cause the eggs to loosen and it readies
them for collection. Throughout the IVF cycle, staff monitor estrogen and progesterone levels via blood samples (Dahlen, 2005). Also, vaginal ultrasounds provide information about the development of the follicles (Dahlen,
2005). Egg collection usually takes place on an outpatient basis under mild sedation, which is followed by a local anaesthetic in the upper wall of the vagina (Dahlen, 2005).
