II. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM One of the primary strengths in arguments for support of gun control is that of statistical information. The statistics do all the talking: Nearly four of every five gun crimes committed involve handguns, inasmuch as they are easy to conceal and can be used at very close range (Problem 1). Those who sustain gunshot wounds are "indeed more likely to die" (Kleck, 1997, p. 286) than with any other assault weapon, including knives. Without a doubt, guns are considerably "more lethal" (Kleck, 1997, p. 286) than any other weapon frequently used in violent crime assaults -- even as much as two to three times as lethal as knives. "The problem with guns is fairly straightforward: they make it easy to kill or injure a person" (Gottlieb, no date). The fairly recent phenomenon of school-aged kids killing their classmates and teachers for nothing more than the thrill of the act has parents and administrators up in arms (Problem 2). Out from all the bloodshed and terror of such despicable crimes comes the most obvious of questions: Why are kids killing each other? More importantly, what will it take to put an end to these juvenile gun-related crimes and arrests? In an ideal world, firearms would remain only within the realm of law enforcement officials; however, the infiltration of guns into the seedier criminal underworld has created a situation that police cannot begin to contain. ...
