occurs is relatively variable, because there is no set time when a child is supposed to enter this particular growth stage; however, the toddler stage is typically recognized between the
ages of one and three years old (Lopes 1993). It is at this point that daycare comes into the picture. There is no question that the toddler stage is "very
important in a childs life" (Lopes 3), inasmuch as it represents the period between infancy and childhood where a significant amount of emotional and intellectual growth takes place. Many
a parent can attest to the fact that "the terrible twos" is a time filled with innumerable discoveries that ultimately help to form the childs character. During the toddler
stage, every single incident that occurs is of great importance to the child. This is a time for considerable growth and learning, so it stands to reason that with
the child a veritable sponge of curiosity, daycare serves as a safe harbor for both learning and socialization. "As children grow into the toddler stage their memories start to
develop, though selectively. Memories can bolster a childs individuality, but the memories held by a child at age two are not likely to remain into adulthood" (Hall 88).
