for as long as possible. Both the nutrition and in-home services programs were developed to improve opportunities for elderly Americans to maintain a healthy lifestyle (Older Americans Act, 2009).
These two programs are components of Title III of the act and reflect the importance of services that impact the daily lives of the elderly. Program Descriptions
The elderly nutrition services program, which is initiated and funded under Title III of the Older Americans Act, provides grant money for agencies in each state that support food programs
for elderly populations (Colello, 2010). These programs can include either provide meals in a congregated setting or meals that are delivered to the home, with the goal of promoting
nutritionally sound meals while addressing the need for support in this area. The program is limited to elderly Americans age 60 and older, and relates to specific issues that
have been identified as hindering autonomy, including food insecurity, socialization, and the need to promote wellness through nutrition and nutrition-related services (Colello, 2010). Colello (2010) reported that this is
the largest of all of the programs funded through the Older Americans Act and that in 2010, the program funded approximately $819.5 million in nutrition programming, serving more than 240
million meals to 2.6 million people. The program is especially important for older Americans with physical limitations living at home, and home-delivered meals comprised the largest segment of the
programming budget (Colello, 2010). In-home services is another program funded through the Agency on Aging based on the directives of the reissue of the Older Americans Act, and
