issue. There are individuals who are vehemently against same-sex marriage, almost to the point of clear hatred towards gays, and then there are those who are in clear support of
same-sex marriages. As is easily understood the topic involves the discomfort of people in association with homosexuality and this is not something that is easily overcome. The following paper argues
in favor of same-sex marriage. The paper examines the cultural condition and outlook on marriage in the nation, the issue of procreation, Christianity, Proposition 8 in California (and the connection
to Mormons in Utah), and legal rights of same-sex couples. Marriage When people think of marriage they think of a man
and woman because that is the way it has generally existed throughout history. As one author notes, "Marriage is, and has been for millennia, the institution that forms and upholds
for society, the cultural and social values and symbols related to procreation" ( Somerville). This particular author further argues that it is marriage that has supported the environment for procreation
and the foundation of all that society believes. It can well be argued that is likely the biggest argument concerning fighting against same-sex marriages.
In truth, this is an argument that really does not have much of a foundation. It is vague and does not do anything but essentially claim that this
is the way it has always existed! Just because it is part of the past does not mean that this is what society should remain stuck in as the planet
and humanity grows. It is like saying that because people had the right to shoot someone who stole their horse, in the old west, means that people should still have
