patients to take their own lives, and then moves on to explain the difference between withdrawing and withholding treatment. It defines and discusses physician-assisted suicide and why it should
be supported; it defines and discusses euthanasia and why it should be supported. It uses the example of patients with severe disorders of consciousness (DOCs), and the fact that
there has been no evidence to support claims that treatment has been effective in these cases as an example of a discipline in which the right to die might be
considered. It discusses hospice care and ways to make it more comforting, including letting patients decide whether to terminate their lives, as they are dying (the definition of hospice
care). It concludes with general remarks and an observation on the rights of the dying. Introduction It would be difficult to find an issue that is as
distressing or uncomfortable for people to discuss as their own death, yet it is one of the most important they will ever face. The media circus surrounding Terri Schiavo
and the bitterness on both sides of that unfortunate incident have brought the debate about the right-to-die to the fore. Ironically, its improved medical care that has brought
about this dilemma. We now have the means to help people survive well into their 90s and beyond; but the question of whether or not such survival is desirable
