over the right to die will not be settled any time soon, although recent polls show that "[M]ore than two-thirds of U.S. adults think that the law should allow medical
euthanasia for dying patients in severe distress who ask to have their lives ended" ("The Harris Poll(r)"). Furthermore two-thirds of all those surveyed would like their state to adopt a
measure that would allow physician-assisted suicide, such as the law that is now in place in Oregon State ("The Harris Poll(r)"). In addition, most people say that if they "were
unconscious and unlikely to recover they should not be kept alive on a life-support system" ("The Harris Poll(r)"). The debate over the right to die is complex because "the core
values of each side are rooted in two entirely different areas" ("The Positive Side of Assisted Suicide: An Argument in Favor of Allowing Physicians Euthanasia Capabilities"-hereafter "Positive Side"). This issue
has been argued back and forth for years, with the result that the major differences have become clear: those who support the right to die tend to "support their ideas
with comments about individual freedom and dying with dignity as a release from great pain" ("Positive Side"). Those who argue against euthanasia tend to base their arguments on more spiritual
and ethereal ground, such as the idea that a persons life ends when God chooses to end it ("Positive Side"). However, it seems "more reasonable to base our decisions
about this practice on more empirical matters such as the right of the individual in deciding not to suffer rather [than on] ... philosophical questions about religious doctrine and code"
