In order to establish this fundamental basis of communication within the workplace, management has to abandon its supervisory egos in exchange for an atmosphere of openness, encouragement and teamwork. For the most part, the concept of business communication -- when implemented correctly -- can be the difference between a productive organization and one that cares little about its workforce. When communication is at its full potential, it can make the workplace a "model of teamwork" (Flynn, 1996, p. 16); however, if the arrangement is pushed upon people without competent leadership at the helm, communication can ultimately do more harm than good. Generally realized when people are imparted with the ability to openly communicate with one another is how they are now able to form a collective opinion with respect to problem solving, decision making and innovative ideas. It is a sad fact how too many managers and supervisors fail to recognize the far-reaching benefits of open communication, choosing instead to rule with an autocratic influence.
