when one stops going to school or pursuing interests, it becomes more difficult to learn new things. The brain is no longer stimulated and it becomes harder to embrace new
knowledge. In general, people look to enhance this ability at all ages from children with learning disabilities to adult learners returning to school. From speed reading to listing to
classical music to eating beef, there are ways to enhance learning ability, but do they work? The Mozart effect for example is the ability of a Mozart sonata, under the
right conditions, to improve both the listeners mathematical and reasoning abilities (Marsh, 1999). This hypothesis was responsible for many far fetched notions about using music in order to make children
smarter (1999). The surfacing of the theory did create quite a stir but in fact there may be some truth to the matter. A study has been cited that showed
that after college students listened to Mozart for just ten minutes, their IQ scores increased by nine points (Casse, 1998). Some have argued that this increased intelligence did not
last (1998). Still, if the study was truly statistically significant, it would make for a remarkable find. In any event, no one doubts that listening to classical music, especially at
a very young age, will effect the spatial-temporal reasoning, an ability needed for math, engineering, and chess (1998). Thus, there is some scientific basis for the theory that is known
as the Mozart Effect. There are many other ways to improve learning ability without listening to music. In evaluating learning ability, the concept itself is important to comprehend and measure.
Ability is difficult to pin down or measure. However, theory-based tests can to some extent measure ability if embraced as a multidimensional concept (Kroesbergen, Van Luit & Naglieri, 2003).
