Today, the workplace is very competitive and applicants and employees with college degrees are plentiful. In fact, few enter the workforce with an advantage over another. Further, with the economy
the way it is, people are reluctant to look for other jobs and this on some level puts employers in a more powerful position. Thus, there are many people who
are employed in jobs they do not want, or they are underemployed. In this type of market, how might an employer improve morale? First, a student writing on this subject
should define morale. Most people seem to know what employee morale is, but Bowles & Cooper (2009) devote an entire chapter in their book to defining the term and they
note that it is something often associated with satisfaction, engagement and well-being. Employee empowerment and the employees level of involvement is disused as well (Bowles & Cooper, 2009). There are
a variety of things that affect morale, which are pay, benefits, career development, job security, organizational image, working conditions, productivity, management and supervision (Bowles & Cooper, 2009). Clearly, morale is
