ago. This paper is a reaction to some of these writings. Discussion Its interesting to note that things like honor, as well as father/son relationships, havent changed over the centuries.
In the Metamorphoses, Ovid tells of Phoebus and his son Phaethon. Phoebus is the god of the Sun, and every day he drives his team of horses across the sky
and brings light to the Earth. Phaethon asks his father to grant him a wish, and Phoebus agrees, saying he can have anything he wants. What the boy wants is
to drive the horses of the Sun-and having given his word, Phoebus cannot break it. He lets the boy go, and of course he loses control of the team; they
break off the regular path and set the Earth on fire, creating the Sahara Desert as well as burning African peoples black; Zeus finally has to throw a thunderbolt and
kill the boy to save the Earth. Phoebus is devastated. Whats interesting here is that we can recognize todays young people in Phaethon; his behavior is typical, backing his father
into a corner and forcing a promise before the older man knows what it is. And its also interesting to see that Phoebus, having given his word, feels that he
has no choice but to keep it, even though he fears, rightly, that the boy will end in disaster. The imagery here, as in Homer, is just gorgeous. A reader
will be struck by descriptions of Phoebus sitting "high on a throne of gleaming emeralds" and the description of the chariot: "... Vulcans masterwork. / Gold was the axle,
gold the shaft, and gold / The rolling circles of the tyres; the spokes / In silver order stood, and on the harness / Patterns of gorgeous gems and chrysolites
