a great deal of Impressionist work used nature as the subject of focus, such as is often associated with the work of Monet and his water scenes, others focused a
great deal on individuals. The following paper examines three painters and their paintings, all the paintings presenting one female figure as the focus point. The works examined are Edgar Degas
"LAbsinthe," Pierre-Auguste Renoirs "Seated Bather" and Mary Cassatts "At the Opera." Degas Degas was considered something of a unique Impressionist in many ways. He possessed a "spiny intelligence"
and his work integrated "puzzling mixtures of categories...unconventional cropping" and an "icy, precise objectivity which was one of the masks of his unrelenting power of aesthetic deliberation" (Artchive [1], 2006).
He was a man who loved to observe and study people and also one of the rare artists who did not do many self portraits as he was fascinated by
the "other," and "all faces except his own" (Artchive [1], 2006). One of the most powerful aspects of his work, and the work
that will be discussed, involves his focus on the less than beautiful aspects of women. He did not fall into the genre of painters who presented women in a beautiful
and ethereal sort of manner. At one point it seems he was asked why he painted women so ugle and he replied, "Because, madam, women in general are ugly," which
was perhaps a sarcastic reply for his works do show a powerful realism that respected women, not the fantasy of women as angels (Artchive [1], 2006). In so many ways
