This paper discuses the question of whether or not "impression management" implies insincerity; it touches on Goffmans dramaturgical perspective in developing the discussion. Discussion Erving Goffman was an American theorist (1922-1982) who constructed the metaphor of life as theater (Kivisto, 2005). "He sees all human interaction as, in some ways, a grand play" (Kivisto, 2005, p. 260). Goffman was interested in the interactions between people on an individual level-what Kivisto calls the "microlevel"; at that level, "the world is much more like a stage than we commonly realize" (Kivisto, 2005, p. 260). Goffman argues that if we can understand how an actor living in America today can make us believe hes the Prince of Denmark, then we can use our understanding of acting to explain how, for example, a professional sells us auto insurance (Kivisto, 2005, p. 260). "If we can understand how a small stage can be used to represent all of Rome and Egypt in Antony and Cleopatra, we can also understand how a Disney store creates a sense of adventure and wonder in any local mall" (Kivisto, 2005, p. 260). If we can understand how the craft by which two actors convince us they are madly in love in Romeo and Juliet, says Goffman, we can understand how a crew of flight attendants "manage and use their emotions for commercial gain" (Kivisto, 2005, p. 260). These processes involve playing roles, as well as using props.
