happened were World War I, Prohibition, the stock market crash of 1929 followed by the Great Depression and the New Deal. Of course, there were many more things that occurred during that time period. There were many new inventions. Radon was discovered, the hydrogen process invented and the automobile would come into its own. Although perhaps significant technology would not take place until the second half of the twentieth century where people went from barely having electricity or television, to living in a futuristic electronic age, one cannot discount scientific discovery that occurred earlier. Yet, in evaluating the time period between 1900 and 1939, what were the most significant events? It seems that in carefully evaluating what went on at the time, that the World Wars, the invention of the airplane and the introduction of the New Deal were the events that would change life forever, especially in America. The Wright Brothers would take off and while people are enamored of space flight for example, they do not realize or at least not consciously contemplate the fact that man could not fly a century ago. It was in North Carolina that the Wright brothers virtually invented what would culminate to todays air travel. It is such an important innovation of the time period that the state has the "First in Flight" designation on its license plates. Clearly, the invention of the airplane was a significant development in that mass air transportation had paved the way for globalization and opened doors for ordinary people. In the past, few ordinary people would have dreams of visiting Asia or any far away for that matter. People would go aboard large ships like Titanic, during the era, and spend inordinate amounts of time to get from one shore to another. Clearly, this ...
