The ACLU, the FCC and the Freedom Forum are just a few names that radio professionals should be aware of. Publications such as Quill, the American Journalism Review, and Billboard are just a handful of publications where information on radio may be found. Those in the field should be kept abreast of what is occurring in the industry, particularly as ethical considerations are embraced and also, just to keep an eye on trends and so forth. For example, there are rules and regulations concerning fair competition. Yet, it was reported in 1999, that the Federal Communications Commission relaxed a regulation that would forbid a single firm from owning more than one local radio or television station in a given market ("FCC" PG). The chairman of the FCC said that their ownership rules are designed to reflect core values of competition, localism and diversity (PG). Indeed, issues such as competition, and more importantly fair competition, crop up. The danger with having a monopoly on television and radio stations is that they all begin to sound alike and while many news reporters claim to be objective, there is usually an obvious slant. For example, it is thought that NPR is decidedly liberal. New Yorks WABC AM radio is primarily conservative. While there are some aspects of other views to offset each predominate view, the danger with one company owning many stations is that there could be a bias.
