"The goal of performance management is to measure and make available various aspects of network performance so that internetwork performance can be maintained at an acceptable level" (Network management basics,
2002). That is, the network has to be up and running; if its not working, its useless (Franken-availability). The network is made up of many components, all of which
have to function properly; network nodes are "often overlooked" (Franken-availability). "If an email server is up but a workstation is down, the network is down from the perspective of the
user" (Franken). The same applies if a printer is down when a user needs to print something out-from his perspective, the entire system is unavailable (Franken-availability). The network manager needs
to "monitor and manage network availability. Properly configuring those tools requires a detailed knowledge of both networking in general, and the particular network being managed" (Franken-availability). The manager is also
responsible for configuration management, or how the network is put together. "The goal of configuration management is to monitor network and system configuration information so that the effects on network
operation of various versions of hardware and software elements can be tracked and managed" (Network management basics, 2002). "Accounting management" means keeping track of network usage by individuals and
groups so that it can be "regulated appropriately" (Network management basics, 2002). "Fault management" is defined as the ability to "detect, log, notify users of, and (to the extent
possible) automatically fix network problems to keep the network running effectively" (Network management basics, 2002). Faults can cause "downtime or unacceptable network degradation," which means that fault management is "perhaps
the most widely implemented of the ISO network management elements" (Network management basics, 2002). "Security management" is implemented in order to control "access to network resources according to local guidelines
