that are at issue in this law suit. These long term benefits must be weighed against the short-term benefit of making a quick buck through development. In conclusion, consider this
situation with the following analogy. The ecology of the world has long been recognized to be a complicated inter-active system that has similar functions to any living other living system.
In other words, it breaths, releases waste, grows and dies. The world is overheating because we have ignored the dynamics of this system. Violent weather patterns are becoming the norm.
The old-growth tropical rain forest and the coral reef slated for destruction by over zealous development are part of the ecology "lungs," as both remove the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide
from the air. At one time, it was believed by scientists that in old-growth forests the removal rate of carbon dioxide is balanced with its release. However, a new
study has found that a 400-year-old forest in southern China continues to soak up carbon from the atmosphere at a rate much faster than the researchers expected (Old-Growth, 2006). Furthermore,
this study found that even selective logging of ancient forests releases huge amounts of carbon into the atmosphere and "forever damages carbon removal mechanisms" (Old-Growth, 2006). Considering this, the analogy
holds that by destroying ancient old growth forests, such as the one slated for destruction in this case, we are essentially depriving the ecology of its "lungs" and we will
be the ones that will suffer for such short-sightedness. Similarly, the worlds coral reefs also play a role in the balance of carbon dioxide and oxygen in the atmosphere.
Like old-growth forests, coral reefs also remove and recycle carbon dioxide and thus are part of the ecological mechanisms that control global warming (Coral Reef, 2007). Furthermore, reefs serve to
