This paper discusses various aspects of physical fitness with regard to middle aged women. Benefits of Physical Activity There is an incredible range of benefits for middle aged women
who keep up some degree of physical activity, including protection from cancer and functional independence in old age. Lets examine some of these benefits. Many women in middle and
old age fall victim to osteoporosis, the loss of bone density. When a person develops osteoporosis, the bones can become thin and brittle, and inclined to break. Many
times, its not that an old person falls and breaks a hip, but that the bone breaks and causes them to fall. The risk of developing osteoporosis can be
lowered by physical activity. "While even weight-supported activity such as cycling may confer some benefit in terms of osteoporosis prevention, bone density appears to adapt in a dose-response fashion
to the mechanical stress exerted upon it, suggesting that activities that place more stress on the musculoskeletal system may lead to greater increases in bone density" (Brehm, 2005). Strength
training is particularly beneficial in this regard. Researchers believe that physical activity may protect against certain cancers, including "breast, ovarian and endometrial cancer by decreasing a womans lifetime exposure to
estrogen" (Brehm, 2005). When a woman exercises she decreases the level of fat in her body, and it is in the adipose tissue where "estrogen precursors are converted into
active estrogens" (Brehm, 2005). Physical activity may protect both men and women against colon cancer as well, by decreasing the "transit time of digested food" (Brehm, 2005). Of course
exercise is vital in weight control, and many women struggle with their weight, and the issues of self-esteem it provokes, all their lives. Current fashions emphasize "an unrealistically lean
