p. 73). II. ILLITERACY AND ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOR The notion that illiteracy is directly associated with the incidence of delinquency has received significant
consideration within the psychological and educational communities. Clearly, if an individual does not possess the ability to read or write, the mere act of obtaining - much less advancing
in - a good job is out of reach. Additionally, the basics of life represent the utmost frustration and anger, such as understanding simple directions or being self-motivated, which
ultimately leads to a significant sense of failure. Combine that with the social stigma inherently associated with illiteracy, and this creates one considerably maladjusted young person whose inability to
read and write ultimately breeds hopelessness and delinquency. Head Start establishes the link between cognitive and linguistic abilities and the capacity for building a better life (Mann et al,
