(Ygoy; Piltin). Good health enhances the individuals quality of life, it is the foundation of an individuals welfare and happiness (Welsh Assembly Government; Ygoy) and longevity (Piltin). A population in good health is not only beneficial for each person, it is beneficial for the society and it is needed for economic sustainability (Ygoy). Good health leads to a longer, more productive life (Welsh Assembly Government). This agency identified some of the benefits of good health as people age as "improved quality of life"; "more opportunities to remain active"; and "less need for health and care services" (Welsh Assembly Government 2006). The better ones health is throughout life, the fewer chronic diseases and disabling conditions should be experienced in later years (Welsh Assembly Government). Good health does not just relate to physical health and physical fitness, it relates to mental health, emotional well-being, and oral health (Ygoy). Good health requires an integration of the different aspects of health because each affects the other. For example, a lack of emotional well-being will lead to physical illness. Of course, the converse is true, also. Most people may not realize the dramatic role oral health plays in overall physical health and emotional well-being. The research in this relationship is overwhelming. Liddick (130) reported that periodontal disease is a cause of low birth weight. Delta Dental stated their research suggests that oral infections can cause low birth weight babies and 12 percent of all babies born have low birth weights (Liddick 130). Another study found that women who suffer from "periodontal disease are 7 times more likely to have a baby of low birth weight or that is premature" (Piero 2005, p. 263).
