Essay / Research Paper Abstract
In four pages this paper examines how X26 Tasers are being implicated in deaths associated with excited delirium that usually occurs when suspects are in police custody or as a result of an altercation with law enforcement officers and also discusses whether or not such implications are valid with scientific research studies and statistics provided. Five sources are cited in the bibliography.

are men between the ages of 34 and 44 (Ho, 2005). A shocking example is a Gwinnett County, Georgia police video in which church deacon and father of four
Frederick Williams pleads with law enforcement officials, "Dont kill me! I have a family to support. Ive calmed down!" (Sullivan, 2007) As an officer orders him to cease
resisting transfer to the detention facility, he fires a Taser or stun gun into the Williams chest, which vividly shakes the suspects chest (Sullivan, 2007). As he is held
down, he is Tasered six additional times (Sullivan, 2007). Shortly thereafter, an officer notices he is not breathing and within a few hours Frederick Williams was dead (Sullivan, 2007).
His family and social lobbying groups such as Amnesty International and the American Civil Liberties Union blame the X26 Taser for causing the extreme delirium that killed Frederick Williams.
In addition, the family filed a lawsuit against Arizona-based manufacturer, Taser International (Sullivan, 2007). Of course, the company denied liability and argued instead that the Taser is used
as a protective measure that enables police officers to subdue suspects in distress quickly and hastened medical intervention (Sullivan, 2007). But this case reveals how X26 Tasers are being
implicated in deaths attributed to excited delirium. Is this implication justified? First, it is important to consider what is meant by excited delirium. It is an oftentimes deadly
medical condition in which the individual typically experiences: * Agitation * Incoherence * Hyperthermia * Paranoia or avoidance behavior * Extreme strength * Extreme stamina * Constant motion * Imperviousness
to pain * Inappropriate behavior * History of chronic stimulant abuse or mental illness * Breaking of shiny objects such as glass and mirrors * Fatal cardiac rhythm of PEA
