often, they have appeared to be enormous American companies merging with other nearly as enormous American companies to form the "monster" multi-national corporations who clearly set the tone for the
business world, the economy, and numerous aspects of daily life, even on the individual consumer level. After all, according to Lipton (1998), there were 10,700 announced mergers in the U.S.,
representing an aggregate value of $920 billion. The value of mergers in 1997 represented almost a 50% increase over 1996. The corporate world
of America is basking in what it considers the benevolent glow of the strong economy, and as such, numerous firms are using the opportunity to take full advantage to improve
their corporate economic circumstances. The corporate universality of increasing revenues and cutting costs by getting larger, has proven time and time again there is most certainly a benefit to a
merger and acquisition. However, that story is always told from the perspective of American business, and American stockholders. The questions are not so quickly answered or the decisions
so neatly made in other parts of the world. Different procedures and varying regulations govern the processes that ultimately result in a significantly different culture surrounding corporate mergers and acquisitions.
