Womans Place" (Kuhn 117). Since that time, there has been a large body of research on gender and language and related fields. What much of this research has
shown is that women and men have their own ways of speaking, so different, that they could be different languages. This has strong implications in the workplace and for
society. Everyone knows what it feels like to walk by a member of the opposite sex at work, think about what to say,
let it go and walk back to their desks to work. The reason for this response is not knowing exactly what to say, if it will be misunderstood or
found to be foolish. Outside of literal work tasks, office-approved jokes, and last nights television show, men and women have little to say to each other in this environment.
In fact, it feels much easier to talk to a person of the opposite sex at work by mimicking the television characters performance than by making a comment of
your own. This was the beauty of shows like Seinfeld and Friends. You arent literally doing the talking. Life would
be easier to deal with if work was the only place where one ran into this problem, but too often, it occurs at home. Many husbands and wives are
relegated to discussing their children, yards or the trip next weekend rather than actually holding a conversation. This is because anything one person says to a member of the
